Rewe To Remove Plastic Lids From Yoghurt Packaging

Germany's Rewe Group will remove the additional plastic lid on all 500-gram cups of natural yoghurt from March of this year.

The retailer also plans to remove plastic lids from all 500-gram cups of soy yoghurt sold under the private-label brands 'ja!' and 'Beste Wahl' from April.

The initiative will see Rewe save more than 69 tonnes of plastic from its operations every year.

The group will begin to sell food-safe and dishwasher-safe reusable lids made of platinum silicone for customers who need a reusable lid for opened cups.

Eco-Friendly Policies

The retailer's new packaging is part of its overall strategy of incorporating environmentally-friendly policies in its packaging.

By the end of 2030, the chain aims to make its own-brand packaging more environmentally-friendly.

It has also pledged to make all plastic packaging for private label products recyclable by 2025.

The group expects to reduce its environmental impact and promote the circular economy of the packaging materials through its environmentally-friendly policies.

For each private-label product along the supply chain, Rewe is also working on individual solutions, with suppliers, distributors, and customers, to preserve the quality products to avoid food waste.
