Sainsbury’s Trials Refill Station For Dishwashing And Laundry Detergents

UK retailer Sainsbury’s has installed a refill point for dishwashing and laundry detergents at its Harringay superstore in North London.

The refill station offers select dishwashing and laundry detergents from the Belgian company Ecover, in bottles that can be reused up to 50 times.

The move is part of a pilot project aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastics in its operations, the retailer added.

'Challenge The Idea Of Single-Use Packaging'

Tom Domen, global head of long-term Innovation at Ecover, said, "At Ecover, we want to challenge the idea of single-use packaging and our disposable culture.

"This partnership with Sainsbury’s is an important step in kickstarting a 'Refillution' in the UK and realising our goal of making refills more accessible for everyone."

The pilot project is in line with the retailer's initiatives to reduce, reuse or replace plastics across the company's operations.

Sainsbury’s aims to extend the trial project to around 19 stores later this year.

“Refillable packaging is just one initiative we plan to try this year and goes to show how a small change can make a big difference," a company spokesperson said.

"We look forward to hearing feedback from the trial with a view to rolling out more widely across the estate, if successful.”
