Wine Production To Grow By 5% In Portugal’s Alentejo Region: Forecast
Wine production in the Alentejo region in Portugal is expected to grow by 5% this year, the Institute of Vine and Wine has forecast.
The institute has also projected a 3% decline in overall wine production in the country in 2020, to around 6.3 million hectolitres.
The president of the Alentejo Regional Winegrowing Commission (CVRA), Francisco Mateus, stated, “We found that when other regions increase wine production, Alentejo sees a decline.”
“This year is the opposite. I hope that this will materialise and that we will have slightly higher production than last year, to compensate for the losses that we have had in the last 5 years.”
According to the Institute of Vine and Wine, the grapes in the region are in ‘good’ health despite unstable weather conditions and mildew outbreaks.
It also pointed out that the quality and quantity of harvest will depend on several weather-related factors such as heatwaves.
