Dagrofa’s MENY Implements Smart Technology To Fight Food Waste

Danish retailer Dagrofa has announced that its MENY retail chain has teamed up with Whywaste to fight food waste by digitising ‘best before’ dates of perishable items.

The retailer will use Semafor, a state-of-the-art, digital system from Whywaste, to keep track of goods that are approaching expiry dates.

Whywaste is a Sweden-based company that offers data driven solutions to retailers to manage food waste.

'Reducing Food Waste'

Director of Whywaste, Kristoffer Hagsted, said, “We are impressed with the chain's commitment to reducing food waste, without compromising on their wide range of fresh foods, focus on quality and service level.

“We have seen stores all over the world halve their food waste, and at the same time save significant amounts of working hours by using our solutions.”

Semafor will help the retailer to take timely action to prevent food items from ending up in the trash.

'A Much Better Overview'

MENY’s chain director, Kenneth Holmen Pedersen, commented, “We have chosen to roll out the food waste system throughout the MENY chain.

“It helps us to reduce food waste significantly, by giving us a much better overview of expiration dates and thus can actively ensure that the item is bought and eaten before it gets too old.”

In February of this year, the newly opened MENY store in the Jenny Kammersgaards way in Horsens implemented Semafor to track the expiry dates of goods.

Søren Hansen, grocer, added, “We use the technology in almost the entire store. My experience is that we find a lot of items in good time so that we can sell them at a reduced price before we would have had to throw them out.

"Especially on groceries, experience shows that we can reduce food waste by up to 50%.”
