France’s E-Commerce Growth Accelerating On Like-For-Like Basis

France’s Fédération du e-commerce et de la vente à distance (FEVAD) has confirmed that during the first quarter of 2015, e-commerce (with m-commerce as a powerful catalyst) accelerated on a like-for-like basis, with Amazon, Cdiscount, Carrefour and E.Leclerc all benefitting from this growth.

Its statistics, as reported by LSA, show that online sales in France during the first three months of 2015 grew by 13.7 per cent on the first quarter of 2014, which, in turn, was up by 11 per cent on Q1 2013.

Behind the quickening growth, FEVAD maintains, is the strengthening prominence of sales effected by smartphones. The overall number of transactions for the quarter went up by 18 per cent to 193 million.

What is remarkable about this development is that it somewhat disproves the theory that the growth of online purchasing in France was gradually beginning to settle into a slower speed, with margins incrementally levelling off. Investment in mobile technology and the marketing of it has blown fresh wind into France’s e-commerce sail.

Online sales for the quarter generated €15.2 billion, with, LSA says, an average of 25 transactions per second.
