Germany's Metro Reveals Revamped IT Strategy, #TakeTheExit

German retailer Metro has announced that its IT department will update its name to 'Metro-Nom', in a bid to appear as a 'pacesetter' in the IT field.

The change will be effective 1 May 2018, and the company said it will highlight its position as an 'international tech player' in the food and wholesale sector.

Recruiting IT Talent

It also revealed that it is behind the 'guerilla campaign', #TakeTheExit, which has been ongoing since 19 March, using 'unconventional and sassy campaign motifs'.

The company's aim has been to hone in on software developers and IT experts using the anonymous hashtag in order to recruit them.

"Introducing Metro-Nom as a new entity of Metro AG represents an essential step for us to show how Metro’s IT function ticks: in an unconventional and humorous way. We implement the digital transformation by developing IT solutions for 25 Metro cash & carry countries and working on technologically exciting and international projects" said chief information officer and managing director of Metro-Nom, Timo Salzsieder.

"Our guerrilla campaign in Berlin very clearly illustrates how we view ourselves: we are agile, somewhat provocative and we are humorous. And this is precisely the kind of colleagues we are looking for to staff our offices in Berlin and Düsseldorf," he added.

Other IT initiatives include its Software Development Hub in Berlin, its founding partnership with CODE University of Applied Sciences, hackathons, tech talks, and internal 'brown bag' sessions.

Metro AG reported in February that its sales grew by 0.2% to €10.1 billion in the first quarter of 2018.
