M&S Apologises After Website Glitch

Marks and Spencer has issued an apology for a technical mishap which allowed customers who avail of its online service to see the personal details of other customers, theguardian.com reports.

Though the website was not hacked, and no significant financial details were involved, people unwittingly accessed random information of others including their phone numbers and addresses.

Its website was offline for two hours while the problem was addressed.

One customer wrote, “Well I tried to register my Sparks card but logged into my account and found another persons details, orders and personal information. This is more than a glitch in the system, this is totally reckless in light of the recent Talk Talk incident [in which the telecommunications company was subject to a cyber attack]. What I want to know is who has my information and now what can they do with it.”

Another said, “I also registered my card tonight to find that I could see at least another three customers’ details. Their name, address, telephone number, date of birth and what they have previously ordered. Not very good M&S.”

The grocer has said it will write to each of the 800 affected customers to “apologise and to assure them that their financial details are safe”.
