SPAR Austria Rolls Out NFC Payment Terminals

SPAR Austria is rolling out more contactless payment terminals by Near Field Communication (NFC) in its SPAR, INTERSPAR and Maximarkt stores in Austria over the next six months its been revealed.

The new Ingenico iPP H-Touch 480 terminals allow customers to make transactions under €15 in less than a second by simply waving a contactless debit card or credit card over a paypad rather than using the chip-and-pin function. Any purchase over €15 will need to be verified with a pin code.

The lower fees will make contactles debit cheaper than the average debit card transaction and merchants will save on a reduction in interchange rates.

1,000 Ingenico iPP H-Touch 480 devices from Card Complete have already been launched in the stores since the start of the New Year. The NFC infrastructure will replace Hypercom from Paylife and customers’ payments will be processed via First Data. (11 Jan)
