Yandex, Grubhub Launch Automated Food Delivery At US College Campus

Yandex Self-Driving Group (SDG), the autonomous vehicle arm of internet giant Yandex, and Grubhub have teamed up to introduce delivery robots to the Ohio State University (OSU) campus in the US.

Orders placed by students and personnel via the Grubhub app will be delivered by a fleet of 50 Yandex robots, with the service operating from 9am to 9pm and serving both residential halls and communal areas.

Each Yandex robot moves at between three and five miles per hour, in all weather conditions, and can deliver chilled, ambient or heated products, keeping items at the correct temperature.

Robotic Delivery

“By partnering with Grubhub, we can bring robotic delivery to some of the people who need it most - students, researchers and professors who are short on time,” commented Peter Szelei, business development executive at Yandex SDG.

“Not only do the rovers enhance the current food delivery options, but open new possibilities for smarter, better and faster dining. Imagine ordering morning coffee and grabbing it from a robot waiting at your doorstep as you head out to class, or studying in a park with friends and requesting a rover to roll up and deliver snacks. We’re thrilled to support making these possibilities a reality.”

OSU and Grubhub have worked collaboratively for number of years, and this new technology helps "enhance the dining experience", according to Brian Madigan, vice president of corporate and campus partners at Grubhub.

“We’re excited to bring this cutting-edge and efficient delivery experience to students at The Ohio State University,” he added.
