Spar Austria Rolls Out Beverages In Eco-Friendly Glass Packaging
Spar Austria has introduced five of its best selling own-brand beverage SKUs in environmentally friendly packaging.
The company has replaced the packaging of its one-litre soda water, apple juice, orange juice, cola and herbal soda with reusable glass bottles.
The move is in line with Spar Austria’s push for a more circular economy, the retailer added.
Commenting on the move, the chief executive of Spar Austria, Dr Gerhard Drexel, said, “Spar is a trendsetter when it comes to reusable products with the largest reusable offer in the area of food retailing.
“We will continue to hold this position, especially with Spar Cola and Spar herbal soda, as nationwide these two classic soft drinks are only available at Spar in a large 1l reusable glass bottle.”
The glass packaging also allows consumers to combine the beverages in a six-pack crate as the glass bottles are uniform for all the drinks.
Shoppers are required to pay a deposit of €0.29 for each returnable bottle and €3 for the crate, Spar added.
In March of this year, the retailer launched organic farm milk in glass bottles under its Natur*Pur range.
Greenpeace managing director, Alexander Egit, said, “With reusable packaging, we will shrink the mountains of garbage, prevent waste found in natural areas and end the disposable mentality.
“According to recent surveys, Austrians desire a wider range of returnable bottles. Spar Austria already offers the largest range of drinks in reusable bottles among the major retailers. This renewed expansion is very welcome and is the right way.”
The retailer has teamed up with Egger Getränke for manufacturing reusable glass bottles and crates in its new glass bottling plant near St. Pölten.
The facility is 100% climate-neutral and equipped with state-of-the-art technology that consumes 25% less energy and 50% less water compared to conventional production methods.
