Kaufland Unveils Pasta, Granola SKUs Containing Edible Insects

German discounter Kaufland has added pasta and granola SKUs containing edible insects to its assortment.

Each of the products is enriched with insect flour from buffalo worms, which the retailer says contain many proteins as well as unsaturated fatty acids and micronutrients, including copper, iron and magnesium.

The company already offers a range of other insect-based products, including protein bars and frozen insect burgers.

Advantages

There are about 1,900 different species of edible insects around the world, and insect farming requires considerably less space, water and food. Moreover, insects grow and multiply faster than other livestock, and emit far fewer greenhouse gases.

The insects are bred and processed in Europe, using modern farming methods, Kaufland said.

The products have been developed by Jimini's, a French company.

The granola is available in three flavours, Apple & Cinnamon, Dark Chocolate and Raspberry & Pumpkin Seeds, each of which is priced at €4.99. The pasta can be bought in Macaroni Rigate and Basil Fusilli varieties, priced at €4.49.
