Italians Lead Bottled Water Consumption In Europe

Italian bottled water sales in 2015, have grown by 7.4% compared to the previous year with 8.7 billion litres sold.

According to IRI Italia data, still water sales lead the segment with 6.1 billion litres (+9% y/y), followed by sparkling water with 1.06 billion (+8.3%).

The turnover of the sector amounted to €1.8 billion (+9% y/y), to which contributed a 1% hike in the sales price to €0.206/litre.

The figures are based on sales in all the main distribution channels in Italy – hypermarkets, supermarkets, independent traders and discounters.

Significantly, Italians are the top consumers of bottled water, drinking 208 litres/year per capita, a new record for the sector and the highest figure in Europe.

Bottled water production in Italy amounted to 13.8 billion litres, with over 260 different brands fighting for the preference of consumers.
