Pingo Doce Shoppers Now Able To Pay Via NFC-Enabled Smartphones

Pingo Doce, part of retail group Jerónimo Martins, has become the first large grocery retailer in Portugal to enable payments through NFC-enabled smartphones, allowing customers to pay for their purchases in a much simpler way.

From January, users of MB Way, a mobile payment service provided by Portuguese banks, just need to tap their Android smartphone at the payment terminal in order to make a purchase. In the case of purchases of less than €20, they do not need to insert their pin.

Initially, the system is available only for Android customers using the latest version of the MB Way app, however a solution for iOS devices will soon be available.

MB Way enables consumers to make instant money transfers, withdraw money and make purchases at participating merchants.

Elsewhere, Jerónimo Martins said earlier today that revenues generated by Pingo Doce increased 3.1% to €3.67 billion for full year 2017 and by 4.9% in Q4 to €975 million.

Jerónimo Martins closed 2017 with a turnover of €16.27 billion, 11.3% higher than a year earlier.
