Kenya: Carrefour To Launch Two New Outlets By August

French retailer Carrefour plans to launch two new stores in Kisumu, the country's third largest city, by August of this year. The new openings will bring the retailer's total store count in Kenya to 15. The company intends to continue its expansion in the market and capture a piece of the growing middle-class segment, which boasts increased purchasing power.

South Africa: Bolt To Expand Its Operations in Johannesburg

Bolt, the Estonian ride-hailing business, is planning to launch a new food delivery service in Johannesburg during the third quarter of 2021. The company, which is already present in Cape Town with its food delivery app, has experienced 50% month-on-month growth in the past three months as a result of renewed lockdown measures, which helped to boost online shopping. In the future, the company plans to also expand in Pretoria and Durban. It currently has around 700 active restaurant partners and 2,500 courier partners in Cape Town.

Tanzania: FFF To Invest $1 Million In Maize And Macadamia Production

Agricultural company Farm For the Future (FFF) has announced plans to invest $1 million in the construction of an irrigation dam in Tanzania. The project will irrigate 250 hectares of maize and macadamia nut plantations, with the construction of the dam set to commence in August 2021. According to local media reports, the irrigation systems will be installed in 2022. Tanzania is one of the few African countries to grow macadamia nuts, along with Kenya and South Africa.

Angola: Refriango To Produce Minute Maid Brand Locally

Refriango Group, one of Angola's biggest beverage companies, has entered into a partnership with Coca-Cola to produce its Minute Maid juice brand locally. The company plans to broaden the product's availability to local consumers and to also export to other countries like Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Refriango operates numerous production units across the country and currently employs 3,800 workers.

Kenya: Victory Farms To Receive A Support For Expansion

In Kenya, aquaculture company Victory Farms is set to benefit from a financial package from AgDevCo, a specialist investor in African agriculture. The firm, which produces tilapia, will use the fund to strengthen its operations in the farming chain and expand into new, regional markets. The company is East Africa's largest commercial fish farm. It boasts operations on the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria, as well as distribution capacity throughout Kenya. Aquaculture provides almost 25% of Kenya's annual seafood production.

Malawi: Pigeon Pea Exports To India Set To Increase

The Malawian government has signed an agreement to export pigeon peas to India. The East African country will export a total of 250,000 tonnes between 2021 and 2026. According to the terms of the protocol, the annual volume may be revised depending on the performance of the Malawian production structure. Thanks to the agreement, the producers will now have a secure outlet and also benefit from good prices on the Indian market, where pulses are a major source of protein for a majority of the population. Malawi is Africa's largest pigeon pea producer, boasting an annual harvest of 450,000 tonnes.
