Ghana: Delivery Service Glovo Launches Operations

Spanish delivery startup Glovo has launched operations in Ghana. This is the business' second West African market in which it has a presence, after Côte d’Ivoire, as well as the fifth in Africa. Glovo is aiming to take advantage of the rapid increase in popularity of online food ordering and delivery services in the two main cities, Accra and Kumasi. Ghana already boasts a number of food delivery services, including Mr. Delivery, Edziban.com and Jumia Food.

Rwanda: Coffee Brands Launched On Singapore-Based Online Platform

Rwanda has announced the launch of two major coffee brands, Kawah and Gorilla’s Coffee, on Redmart, Singapore’s leading online retail store. With the move, Rwanda is seeking to communicate the values behind these brands as well as their uniqueness, and is aiming to enhance the revenue of producers. The products are also available in the stores of NTUC FairPrice, the country’s largest supermarket chain, and on Shopee, a leading e-commercw platform in Southeast Asia. Rwanda generated $55 million from coffee exports in 2020.

Kenya: Tropikal Brands Unveils New Potato Chips Brand

Kenya-based food manufacturer Tropikal Brands has launched 'Partee Chips', a new brand of potato chips. The product is available in resealable tins, enabling multiple use while ensuring continued product freshness. The new product is available across all supermarkets, convenience stores as well as local shops.

Egypt: Jumia To Venture Into Food Delivery Market

Online retailer Jumia Technologies is seeking to tap into the Egyptian food delivery market, one of the fastest growing in North Africa. The move will make Egypt the tenth market in which the company, dubbed 'the Amazon of Africa' will offer its food delivery services. In Egypt, demand for delivered meals and groceries has experienced strong growth due to coronavirus-related restrictions. Uber Eats exited the market in May last year, while there are some rivals such as Talabat and Elmenus that are well anchored in the market.

Uganda: Bidco Uganda To Double Palm Oil Production

Ugandan edible oil processor Bidco is seeking to produce 80,000 tonnes of palm oil over the next five years, up from its current output of 40,000 tonnes. As part of this plan, the company is targeting the development of 1,000 hectares of farmland in 2021, as well as 5,000 hectares over the next four years on Buvuma Island on Lake Victoria. The project aims to reduce vegetable oil imports to the country, which are valued at nearly $50 million per year.

Nigeria: Dangote Sugar Refinery Posts 33% Rise in Revenue In 2020

Dangote Sugar Refinery, the country's largest sugar processor, has registered a 33% year-on-year increase in revenue to N214.30bn (€473 million) during its financial year ended 31 December. The company reported a profit after tax of N29.78 billion (€66 million) during the period under review, compared to N22.36 billion in 2019. DSR holds 60% market share of the Nigerian sugar sector and has the capacity to produce 1.44 million metric tonnes per annum. The soft drinks and food and beverages sector accounts for over 60% of the total industrial sugar consumption in Nigeria, according to the USDA.
