Kesko Reveals Finns Eat A Greater Variety Of Fish

Finnish retailer Kesko has published a report that finds consumers in Finland are buying a more diverse range of fish from its stores, according to recent sales data. It also added that Finns now eat fish about once a week.

The retailer found that salmon is ‘by far’ the best-selling fish, accounting for almost 60% of all K-food stores’ sales of fresh fish.

Sales of fish products as a whole have grown by 12% compared to the previous year. Sushi has experienced the highest level of growth, with sales increasing by 40%.

Everyday Food

Janne Vuorinen, purchasing and sales manager at Kesko Food, said, “Wild-caught fish sales are on the rise. During 2016, sales went up by 9% and in the first half of this year they grew by 6%.”

Kesko’s most sold fish are salmon (including rainbow trout), baltic herring, pike-perch, white fish, and vendace

“Fish is an everyday food, which is currently being eaten about once a week on the basis of sales data from K-food stores," added Vuorinen. "When there is a diversity of fish species available in stores and the variety of recipes also becomes more diverse, Finns will increase their fish eating.”

Last week Kesko reported that Finnish consumers demanded more diversity in their supermarkets, saying that consumers are now more informed about food products and are increasingly willing to invest in food quality.
