Procter & Gamble Introduces New Child-Resistant Packaging

Consumer-goods company Procter & Gamble is launching new packaging for its laundry products, with an increased child-resistant design.

The company says that the new design, which was developed after three years of research and testing, provides an even stronger layer of protection, to reduce household accidents.

The Child-Guard tub requires consumers to squeeze both sides of the lid and twist at the same time to open the packaging. It will be introduced on Tide Pods and Gain Flings laundry pods in the US by the end of the year.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the families who use our products,” said Sundar Raman, North American vice-president of fabric care for P&G.

"Knowing that access is a key factor in accidental exposures, we’ve made the new Child-Guard tub easy to close but harder to open, so parents and caregivers can both conveniently and safely store the product, further driving down accidents."

Continued Development

Last year, P&G introduced bagged packaging with a Child-Guard zipper, added a bitter substance to the outer film of laundry pods, and increased the film strength.

It has also launched a national education campaign, working with Safe Kids Worldwide, the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cleaning Institute, and poison-control centres.

The company says that these efforts have led to a 39% reduction in the rate of accidents related to P&G's liquid laundry packs, which it is committed to reducing further.
