Lidl Germany To Cut Down Plastic Usage In Product Packaging

Lidl Germany has announced that it will offer its own-brand, liquid detergents - Formil and Maxitrat - in a more concentrated form, in smaller sized bottles.

The new packaging is aimed at cutting down plastic usage by around 116 tonnes per year.

The company claims that the higher concentration of liquid detergents will cut down the required dosage level from 75 millilitres per wash to 55 millilitres per wash.

Sustainable Packaging

In addition, CO2 emissions during transport will also be cut down due to the reduction in the packaging weight.

The smaller size of bottles will also make it lighter and easier for customers to handle these products.

The retailer is also gradually increasing the proportion of recycled material in the product packaging of cleaning products. It plans to replace around 970 tonnes of new plastic each year with recycled material.

Optimise And Recycle

Starting November this year, the retailer also introduced optimised packaging bowls for meat and poultry products, aimed at reducing plastic consumption by 11%.

The packages use less plastic and has a better thickness distribution at the bottom, with an improved crossbar that provides the same stability.

Lidl Germany is also working towards cutting down plastic usage in other meat and poultry products, by ensuring the recyclability of product packaging.
