Lidl Launches New Free-From, Organic Lines In Italy

Discounter Lidl has launched a new range of own-label free-from and organic products in Italy, just-food.com has reported. The range will include more than 60 products including frozen, fresh and dried products, as well as wine and drinks.

The retailer said the new lines will cater to increased food allergies and customers' interest in a healthier and more eco-friendly diet.

'The Bio Organic and Free From brands reflect the excellent quality/price ratio of all Lidl products and truly make organic and gluten/lactose-free products accessible to all customers,' Lidl said in a statement.

The company has developed free-from or organic versions of popular items such as Taverna Giuseppe frozen pizzas, Mericio dairy products and Italiamo. Lactose-free mozzarella made with Italian milk and an organic tomato sauce are also part of the new line.

Italy is the largest market for gluten-free products in Europe. Research done in April by national food producer association Coldiretti indicated the consumption of such products increased by 50 per cent in 2015, while consumers bought 20 per cent more organic items the same year.

All organic products will feature an EU logo that certifies their origin, while the gluten-free products will carry the logo of the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC).
