Mondelēz Calls For Complete Transparency And Sustainability In Palm Oil Supply Chain

Mondelēz International has called on palm oil suppliers to commit to concession mapping, which is vital in making the palm oil supply chain transparent and sustainable.

It will enable the company and its suppliers to identify and focus on areas that face the highest risk of deforestation.

In 2016, Mondelēz International had asked its suppliers to map all the mills they source palm oil from on Global Forest Watch, as well as their own concessions, and engage their upstream suppliers to publish these maps on GFW.

The company has now asked for group-wide concession maps, for upstream suppliers, as a condition for doing business.

Eliminating Deforestation

The company also aims to act faster when it comes to eliminating deforestation in their palm oil supply chain through the implementation of time-bound remediation plans.

It has terminated contracts of 12 suppliers who have failed to reform their palm oil production methods.

Global director of sustainability at Mondelēz International, Jonathan Horrell, said, “Mondelēz International remains fully committed to driving change in the palm oil sector and today’s actions against 12 upstream suppliers reflect that commitment.”

“We will continue to pursue existing and new initiatives that seek to drive effective change across palm oil-growing communities.”

Throughout the years, Mondelēz International has continuously raised the bar for itself and its suppliers, and resulted in substantial progress in improving the traceability and implementation of sustainability policies in the palm oil supply chain.
