M&S Demand Eco-Friendly Lambs

The UK supermarket chain M&S has called on New Zealand lamb producers to become more environmentally friendly.  A delegation representing the retail group travelled to New Zealand to meet with producers and processors who supply lamb to the business. The representatives from the supermarket group commented that British consumers were becoming more aware of matters such as animal welfare and food miles, and were choosing purchases not only on price but on these factors also.

AgResearch, one of New Zealand's leading research organisations was involved in the talks with the delegation. Representatives from Silver Fern Farms, Alliance Group and Beef+Lamb New Zealand attended the talks to discuss how science can support the farm, processing, transport processors and New Zealand farmers. The parties looked at scientific solutions such as reproductive technology and farming systems over the week-long event. (16 Feb)
