Spanish retailer Mercadona has opened one of the largest logistics centres in Spain, in Léon. The new facility, which cost an estimated €200 million to develop, will create 400 new jobs, and will service around 180 stores. As of the end of last year, Mercadona operated 58 stores in the Castilla y León region.
Mercadona is also using the new facility to boost the amount of produce it sources from local suppliers. Last year, the retailer spent €953 million on purchases from suppliers in the Castilla y León community, which amounted to 11 per cent of the regional food industry. (28 Mar)
