Spanish retailer Mercadona and the government of the Castilla-La Mancha region have signed an agreement to guarantee the security of food products, financialfood.es has reported.
The agreement assures the rapid communication of any health alerts, to ensure that unsafe food is not placed on store shelves.
It establishes the proper procedure to follow if either party becomes aware of unsafe items in the region.
In this manner, Mercadona can guarantee a recall throughout all stores of any product deemed unfit for human consumption.
The accord is the result of a months-long collaboration between the Ministry of Public Health and the retailer.
In the province of Castilla-La Mancha, roughly 600 small and medium businesses work with Mercadona, employing 14,000 people directly and indirectly. The company currently distributes to 78 supermarkets in the area: 18 in Albacete, 25 in Ciudad Real, six in Cuenca, eight in Guadalajara and 21 in Toledo.
