Migros, WWF Collaborate On Sustainable Strawberry Cultivation In Spain

Migros has announced a joint project with WWF Switzerland to gradually implement sustainable farming methods for strawberry cultivation in Huelva, in Spain.

The measures will include efficient water management, responsible use of pesticides, preserving biodiversity, and implementing soil protection measures.

Better Working Condition

The retailer will also organise roundtables with local unions and workers to create a better working condition for local communities.

It aims to foster gender equality, effectively address complaints, and look into matters related to occupational safety, health, housing, hygiene, and drinking water.

Protecting Natural Resources

As a part of the project, strawberry farmers will be trained and sensitised about the importance of protecting natural resources.

Strawberry cultivation is the main livelihood of the residents of Huelva.

This area, which is also a part of the Coto de Doñana National Park, is home to rare birds and a natural habitat for over six million migratory birds.

Intensive agriculture has resulted in an 80% drop in water inflow into the wetland and poses a threat to biodiversity in the region.
