First 'Solidarity' Supermarket Opens In Milan

The first 'solidarity' supermarket, which offers free grocery shopping for families in financial trouble, has opened in Milan.

According to Italian daily La Repubblica, the 'SoliDando' outlet will help 150 families in one year, or a total of 560 people.

The initiative enables people at a social and economic disadvantage to do their shopping by choosing from a basket of 83 products (oil, vinegar, salt, sugar, milk, pasta, rice, flour, biscuits, tuna, peeled tomatoes, vegetables, nappies, etc.), without any money exchanging hands.

Non-Profit

Families who can access the store are identified by the non-profit iBVA association, and will feature those who already use its services or other similar entities in the area.

SoliDando is open on Tuesday and Friday mornings and all cashiers and merchants are volunteers.
