Milan Transforms Newsagents Into Neighbourhood Stores

A new initiative has kicked off in the Italian city of Milan with the aim of transforming newsagents into small neighbourhood stores.

The first store under the so-called 'Quotidiana' format is located between Via Bocconi and Viale Bligny.

The initiative is the brainchild of Gruppo Milan Card, which has earmarked €1 million to acquire 12 newsagents, with the potential for a further 38, and the intention of growing in the rest of Italy due to possible investment funds being made available.

As well as selling newspapers and magazines, the Quotidiana outlets will now offer a selection of quality foodstuffs and basic necessities at competitive prices, reports daily Il Sole 24 Ore.

According to its creators, Quotidiana represents a 'counter-revolution of the large-scale retail sector' thanks to 'a reduction in surface area, optimisation of references, and greater proximity'.

Sustainable Choice

According to Filippo Scarpellini, CEO of the Gruppo MilanoCard, the Quotidiana kiosks also boast environmental sustainability credentials –electric recharging points for scooters, cars and motorbikes will be installed, while products on sale 'are largely in recyclable packaging and come from suppliers who adopt environmental and social sustainability plans'.

The kiosks have undergone a major architectural restyling, carried out by architect Martina Valcamonica, making them safe, sustainable and visually appealing.
