Carrefour Roll Out New Mobile Payment Technology

Carrefour has combined with BBP Paribas to introduce a new mobile payment system in its stores and online, which is linked with its loyalty benefits.

The new system, which is being tested in some stores before it is rolled out across all outlets, allows customers to pay for purchases with their mobile phones, automatically combining standard loyalty services with the payment facility.

The technology was designed in 2015 and was developed with other tech startups in mind, allowing them to add enhanced services.

Experiments so far have shown strong interest among consumers and full-scale tests are now due to be conducted over the next few months in the Ile-de-France (Greater Paris region) at a dozen sales outlets representing the full range of Carrefour store formats.

"We're working to develop really useful services for our customers that will help us forge a closer relationship with them," said Carrefour chairman and chief executive Georges Plassat.
