Coop Lombardia Introduces Satispay Payment Platform

Coop Lombardia has become the latest grocery retailer in Italy to introduce the Satispay mobile payment platform.

Initially, 57 of the cooperative's stores in the Lombardy region will be involved, followed by seven hypermarkets and 36 supermarkets in Liguria by the end of October.

In a statement, Coop Lombardia said it was working with other Coop Italia cooperatives to extend the payment platform throughout its network.

Satispay System

Satispay allows customers to pay at the till or the self-service checkouts through an app installed on their smartphone. By selecting the point of sale, and entering the amount that has been calculated, the customer can complete the transaction via mobile, and the store will recognise and accept the payment.

The Satispay App, which is available for iOS, Android and Windows devices, has been downloaded 330,000 times and is used by 180,000 users in approximately 20,000 business outlets.

To encourage shoppers to use the system, Coop Lombardia will offer a 25% cash back refund during one week in October, to be followed by a 10% rebate for a few weeks after that.

In June, Esselunga announced it had also selected the Italian app for mobile payments in its stores.
