Billa To Introduce NCR SelfServ Checkouts

Austrian retailer Billa will deploy NCR SelfServ Checkout hardware and software in its stores following the use of the technology in its sister store, Merkur.

Billa, part of Rewe Group, will initially roll out the new checkouts in two stores, in Vienna and Graz. The stores are in central locations in the cities, and the retailer is aiming to reduce waiting times in high-volume outlets. There are plans for deployment in additional supermarkets in the coming months.

“By deploying NCR self-checkouts, we wanted to introduce an additional service offering and value for our customers,” said Billa chief executive Volker Hornsteiner.

“As many tourists are already familiar with the technology from their home countries, we experienced a high usage rate right from the beginning. We expect Austrian shoppers to continue that trend as they become more comfortable with the technology and experience the benefits.”
