Nespresso, the Nestlé-owned maker of coffee pods, has launched a sustainability project named The Positive Cup.

During the next six years, Nespresso will source all of its permanent range of Nespresso Grand Cru coffee beans sustainably via its new programme, investing over SFr15 million in Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan.

The aim of the undertaking is to protect farmers' livelihoods, and to make the company carbon neutral.

The Positive Cup will also entail collecting 100 per cent of used capsules, which will be recycled and then reused in new capsules sent to countries such as the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy. The material for virgin capsules is claimed to be sourced under new Aluminium Stewardship Initiative regulations, which have been created by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

“The development of even more innovative programmes with our partners demonstrates our commitment to generating positive impacts for all stakeholders across the entire value chain,” said Nestlé Nespresso CEO Jean-Marc Duvoisin.
