Nestlé Invests €4mn To Expand Distribution Centre In Portugal

Nestlé Portugal has announced a €4 million investment to remodel and expand its main national distribution centre in Avanca, in the municipality of Estarreja.

The centre is responsible for the shipment of 80% of the products that Nestlé Portugal sells in Brazil and abroad.

The invesment will add an additional 4,100 square metres. The entire complex adjoining the main Nestlé factory in Portugal will also be modernised.

The factory produces brands such as Cerelac, Nestum, Chocapic and Mokambo and exports 50% of its total production to 36 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

According to Nestlé Portugal, as a result of the modernisation works, the company will achieve greater 'environmental efficiency in the production chain'.

The work should be completed by the end of next year.

Nestlé Portugal has three factories in the country, located in Porto, Avanca and Lagoa, in the Azores.

Last month, the director general of Nestlé Portugal, Jordi Llach, announced that the company is increasingly focusing on healthier products.

It recently launched a Nesquik with 30% less sugar, an ice cream range with a limit of 110 calories per unit, and the Nestum Mix blended with whole grains. During 2017, it will introduce its first range of organic products.

Nestlé researchers have also said they have discovered a way to structure sugar differently and decrease the amount of sugar used in their products.

Still using natural ingredients, the faster-dissolving granules mean that the confectioner can use 40% less sugar and still achieve almost the same taste, it explained.
