Netto Marken-Discount To Adopt New Labeling Standard For Meat Products

German supermarket chain Netto Marken-Discount has announced that it will introduce a new labeling standard for its pork, poultry, and beef products, commencing in April of this year.

The new labels are based on four levels of categorisation, that have been determined by the living condition of the animals.

Four-Level System

Level 1 or ‘stable housing’ indicates that the legal requirements for animal welfare standards and safety parameters have been met.

Level 2, also known as ‘stable keeping plus’, stands for higher standards, such as 10% more space in the stables.

Level 3, termed as ‘outdoor climate’, is for animals raised in farms that have more space, as well as exposure to the open air.

Level 4, known as ‘premium’, will include organic meat, and higher standards of animal well-being.

Animal welfare has been a crucial part of the ecological and social responsibility at Netto Marken-Discount.

Other initiatives by the retailer include a sustainable engagement with the WWF in 2015, to encourage customers to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
