Carrefour Poland Launches Organic Private-Label Rye And Wheat Bread

Carrefour Poland has introduced its first organic private-label rye and wheat bread offerings in two hypermarkets in the country.

“We are pleased to meet the strict standards required to receive the BIO certification – thanks to this, our customers are assured that Carrefour bread is a completely organic product. In the future, we plan to extend the production of BIO bread [to] new stores in Poland,” said Barbara Kowalska, director of quality and sustainable development at the company.

The organic certification covers the production of wheat and rye bread in Carrefour stores in Poland. The organic stamp guarantees that the product is compliant with organic farming laws and made with certified organic ingredients.

Two hypermarkets currently sell the certified organic bread: one in Katowice, on ul. Roździeńskiego, and the other in Bydgoszcz, in Galeria Pomorska. Products in the line include BIO wheat bread, at 14.99 PLN a kilogram, BIO rye bread, at 9.99 PLN a kilogram, and the bake-off BIO wheat baguette, at 3.59 PLN a kilogram.

Nutritional Transformation

The launch is part of the retailer’s nutritional transformation strategy. Carrefour Poland’s goal, the company noted, is to become ‘the leader of food transformation in the country by providing its customers with access to local and regional products, as well as [organic] food'.

To advance this aim, the company will provide direct support for farmers transitioning to organic practices, through funding from the Carrefour Foundation, and focus on food security and quality, it said.

Carrefour Poland has roughly 900 stores in the country, in five formats: hypermarkets, supermarkets, residential and specialist stores, and online.

In January, the Carrefour group announced that it would sell 100% organic French bread in its stores in France.

Four types of organic bread have been available across all of its store formats in France since March 2018, including an organic boule loaf, a baguette, wholemeal bread, and a multigrain loaf.
