Organic Sales Rise 12% In Danish Supermarkets

Sales of organic, or Øko, products are up 12% in Danish supermarkets, according to new data from Nielsen.

Dansk Handelsblad reported that across a full year period from mid-June 2017 to mid-June 2018, organic sales outperformed the general grocery market, which grew by just 0.5%.

According to Nielsen, organic sales now account for 8.7% of total sales in Danish grocery stores.

Regional Growth

Organic sales were highest in Fyn and Sydsjælland, where they rose by 14%, according to Dansk Handelsblad. In Nordsjælland and Østjylland, organic sales rose by 13%.

The data also showed that Copenhagen accounts for 32% of the total organic consumption in Denmark, while Sønderjylland, Nordjylland and Vestjylland have the lowest level of organic consumption.

'The increased demand for organic products places greater demands on both suppliers and retailers,' Nielsen's report read.

'Refrigerator space and shelf space doesn't change, and the challenge [for retailers] is to provide the optimum range in the optimum space, to meet demand while also minimising out of stock situations'.
