Aldi Opens New €75m Distribution Centre In The East Midlands

Discounter Aldi has opened its largest distribution centre in the UK to date, in Sawley, Derbyshire.

The site, which spans over 600,000 square feet, will act as a new hub for the region. It is the chain's 11th UK distribution centre, and will employ more than 400 people and serve over 80 stores.

The £64 million (€75 million) facility in Sawley will serve Aldi’s growing customer base in the East Midlands as the group extends its store openings target to 1,200 stores across the UK by the end of 2025.

Investment Plans

The facility forms part of Aldi’s £1 billion (€1.18 million) planned investment in opening new stores, upgrading stores and improving its distribution capabilities in 2019 and 2020.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK & IRL, commented on the new centre, “Our new Sawley distribution centre significantly increases our capacity and allows us to open even more stores across the East Midlands to cater for the growing number of shoppers switching to Aldi."

Speaking about the company's continued expansion plans, Hurley said, “there are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all. This is something that we are looking to address in the coming years.”
