Alnatura To Discontinue Plastic Bags For Fruit And Vegetables

German organic retail chain Alnatura has announced that it will no longer provide single-use plastic bags for fruit and vegetables in its outlets from 2019 onwards.

Commenting on the move, Alnatura's packaging expert, Isabell Kuhl, said, "Most fruit and vegetables, such as apples, oranges, cucumbers, and broccoli, can be transported home without additional protection."

Alternative Options

Paper bags will be available for customers who do not wish to give up on disposable packaging.

Around 60% of the customers in Alnatura stores either buy their fruits and vegetables unpackaged or carry their own reusable, mesh bags.

"Many people want to do something about the plastic flood and we are confident that many of our customers will change their purchasing behaviour accordingly," Kuhl added.
