Barilla Switches To 100% Italian Sustainable Wheat

Barilla has committed to the use of 100% Italian sustainable wheat, sourced from 13 different Italian regions, in its products.

The pasta maker has selected four exclusive varieties of durum wheat, featuring a high protein content (14% wheat and 13% semolina), high quality gluten, a golden-yellow colour and low ash content (mineral salts).

It said that the geometry of the main pasta shapes has been redesigned, increasing their thickness and diameter, resulting in a 'even more full-bodied pasta with an authentic wheat taste'.

The changes apply to Barilla's 10 main product formats: Spaghetti N.5, Spaghetti Grossi N.7. and Spaghettoni N.8 (which have increased their diameter); Penne N.73, Mezze Penne N.70, Tortiglioni N.83, Mezze Maniche N.84, Rigatori N.89 and Linguine N.13 (increased their thickness); and Fusilli N.98 (redesigned in shape).

Also renewed is the packaging, which retains the iconic red logo but updates the colour of the boxes to bright blue, a colour synonymous with Italy.

Wheat Purchasing

During 2020, Barilla will significantly increase its purchase of Italian durum wheat, involving more than 8,000 farmers who are members of over 100 consortia and cooperatives.

The new Barilla pasta will be produced in three separate plants, at Marcianise, Foggia and Pedrignano, the largest pasta factory in the world.
