Carrefour Spain Introduces Combibloc EcoPlus Packaging For UHT Milk

Carrefour Spain has introduced the first Spanish UHT milk sold in Combibloc EcoPlus packaging, which the company says is more ecologically sustainable.

The new packaging reduces carbon emissions by 28%, mostly by replacing the resource-intensive aluminium cap with one made of a synthetic polyamide.

The milk is available in whole, semi-skimmed and skimmed options.

Carrefour is in the process of creating a packaging 'ecodesign' plan. Some of the goals of this plan include the elimination of unnecessary packaging, using less raw materials, the optimisation of container and package size for transport, and using sustainable, recycled and recyclable materials.

The company said that 350 products over the last year have been revamped to be more sustainable version. One such example was the adaptation of the Carrefour 2-litre water bottle by reducing plastic content by 20%, cutting 14 tonnes of PET per year. The retailer also worked with egg packager Granja Virgen del Rosario to replace the original virgin polymer material with a recycled polymer, and to make the cartons smaller in order to be able to transport more product in fewer trips.
