Coca-Cola To Roll Out Dasani Water In Aluminium Cans

In a bid to step up its sustainability initiatives, Coca-Cola has announced plans to introduce Dasani water in aluminium cans and bottles in the US.

In September of this year, the cola giant will launch the cans in the Northeastern United States, before distributing it to other regions by 2020.

Water in aluminium bottles will be launched by the middle of 2020, Coca-Cola said.

The company has also introduced the HybridBottle, a packaging innovation made of up to 50% plant-based renewable and recycled PET material, in order to reduce the use of virgin PET plastic.

Sustainability Goals

These initiatives support the beverage giant's global 'World Without Waste' goal aimed at making its bottles and cans with an average of 50% recycled material by 2030.

Commencing this fall, Dasani will add 100 PureFill units to its package-less drinking water network.

Dasani brand director, Lauren King, described these initiatives as the brand's "largest sustainability initiative" to date.

"While there is no single solution to the problem of plastic waste, the additional package and package-less options we are rolling out [...] mark an important next step in our effort to provide even more sustainable solutions at scale," King added.

Fully Recyclable Bottle

In 2009, Dasani launched the first-ever fully recyclable bottle made partially from plants.

It was also the first major water brand to introduce a package-less water dispensing unit – Dasani PureFill – in 2018.

Over the next five years, it aims to remove one billion virgin PET bottles from its US supply chain.

Group director of packaging innovation, Coca-Cola North America, Sneha Shah, said, "We are working diligently to continually reduce our overall environmental footprint through smarter package design, procurement of recycled and renewable materials while continuing to deliver exceptional consumer experiences."
