Continente Launches Pilot Project To Eliminate Plastic Bags

Portuguese retailer Continente has launched a pilot project that offers customers alternatives to plastic bags for fruit and vegetable purchases.

They have the option to bring their own bags or opt for reusable cotton bags offered by the food retailer.

The project also offers customers a card made of recycled paper for sticking the price and bar code labels on their fruit and vegetable purchases.

Sustainable Alternatives

The retailer has estimated that the move can cut plastic use annually by more than 430 tonnes if all customers adhere to sustainable alternatives to plastic for the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

The retailer is also planning to switch to 100% recyclable bakery bags made of natural fibres.

Presently, the bags in its bakery section are made of paper and transparent plastic.

In March of this year, the retail group signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which aims to promote a circular economy model for plastic packaging.
