Dutch Retailer Jumbo Sees Sales Rise More Than €1bn In A Year

Dutch retailer Jumbo has said that consumer sales across its core Jumbo banner rose by 14% last year, or €1.03 billion, to €8.43 billion.

Total group sales for the year, which ran to 29 December, totalled €8.65 billion, with the La Place foodservice business equating to €165 million worth of sales, and EMTÉ stores that have not yet been converted adding €85 million in the first half of the year.

Store Count

Jumbo said that its store numbers grew to 672 over the course of the year, mainly due to the conversion of the remaining 47 EMTÉ supermarkets (a total of 70 EMTÉ stores were converted), as well as the addition of four Agrimarkt stores to the Jumbo formula.

In addition the group also opened two new Jumbo Foodmarkt branches and two Jumbo City branches.

Turnover growth on a like-for-like basis, among existing Jumbo outlets, was 6.5%, which the retailer said was ahead of the market average of 4%.

Jumbo's current market share in the Dutch market has now risen to 21% as of the end of 2019.

"We are once again finishing a great Jumbo year with strong figures," commented CEO Frits van Eerd. “If we can continue to sustain this growth in 2020, then we must be able to achieve our revenue target of €10 billion in 2021."

Next year (2021) marks the centenary year for the business.

Belgian Market

On the group's recent entry into Belgium, where it opened its first three stores in the fourth quarter of the year, van Eerd added that the business has been "very well received" by Belgian consumers, and "we see a lot of room for expansion there".

Jumbo opened its first supermarket on Belgian soil in Pelt in November 2019, soon followed by stores in Rijkevorsel and Lanaken. The retailer plans to open between 12 and 15 new Jumbo outlets across Belgium during 2020.

Also on the agenda are a planned 17 new Jumbo concession openings in HEMA stores, following a recent partnership agreement between the two businesses. In addition, the two businesses will develop a 'joint store' concept at six city based locations.

Jumbo also recently reached agreement with organic wholesaler Udea to take over six stores in the Randstad in 2020, where Marqt and Ekoplaza branches are now located.
