The French government has announced new measures for the tobacco industry, with the aim of reducing the number of smokers in the country.
The measures will be introduced over the course of the next two years.
Almost one third of the French population are smokers.
The plans were set out by Health Minister Marisol Touraine. They include plain packaging on cigarette products, a ban on smoking in vehicles where children younger than 12 years are present, a no-smoking policy in places frequented by children, and a ban on the advertising of e-cigarettes by May 2016.
Explaining the measures, Touraine said, “We have set an ambitious goal: to succeed in making children born today the first 'non-smoking' generation in 20 years.”
Australia has previously introduced plain cigarette packaging. Earlier this year, EU directives were announced to place graphic images on cigarette packets to deter the habit.
