German Plastics Packaging Market Growing

The German IK Association of Plastic Packaging has reported that the German market for plastics packaging and films grew in 2013.   According to the European trade association, production output rose by around 2.4% to 3.9m tonnes, a turnover worth €13.6bn.   The stable growth of consumer packaging was attributed to strong domestic demand.   Industrial packaging increased in the last quarter of 2013.   Despite the growth, the German plastics industry faced strong competition from other European countries.   Rising energy costs, with a renewable energy levy, affected the plastic films industry in particular.   According to preliminary figures from the German Federal Statistical Office for the first five months of 2014, the plastics packaging industry generated an increase in turnover of around 4%, compared to the same period in the previous year.   The IK has over 300 members; it accounts for 3.6m tonnes of plastic packaging and films.   If you would like your packaging business to be included in our upcoming feature on innovative packaging for the supermarket-FMCG industry, please contact our editorial team by email, deadline August 15. © 2014 European Supermarket Magazine
