GPA To Recycle 60 Tonnes Of Plastic For New Packaging

Brazilian retailer Grupo GPA will recycle 60 tonnes of plastic a year to produce new packaging for its Qualitá private label stain remover.

For this initiative, the retailer has teamed up with Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas. The collaboration is part of the Wecycle platform, created by the petrochemical industry for the reuse of plastic waste in the production chain.

Logistics

Around 184 recycling stations will be installed in Extra hypermarkets and Pão de Açúcar supermarkets across Brazil, and the materials gathered in-store will be donated to partner cooperatives.

Once separated, the plastic is used to produce resin (consisting of 70% recycled material and 30% virgin polyethylene) that is transformed and can be used to produce the packaging of the Qualitá stain remover, which sells around 10,000 pots per month.

The partnership also represents a new step in GPA's 'Novo de Novo' program, which aims to reuse paper and packaging collected from the recycling stations in the retailer's supply chain. GPA’s collection points receive approximately 2 million kilos of recyclable materials per year.
