Italy’s U2 Supermercato Introduces Biodegradeable Bread Bags

In line with its commitment to protect the environment and reduce waste, Italy’s U2 Supermercato has introduced 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable bread bags.

Produced by Italian company Taghleef Industries, these eco-friendly bags are made from polylactic acid PLA 100, or bio-plastics derived from renewable sources.

The bags, available in all U2 Supermercato stores, are environmentally friendly and offer more options at the end of life: incineration, recycling and composting.

After using them as containers for bread purchased, consumers can then reuse them for collecting or disposing of organic waste, as long as the price sticker is removed from the bag, as it is not compostable.

U2 Supermercato offers traditional biodegradable bags to consumers, as well as reusable bags made of non-woven fabric (for €0.50).
