Smurfit Kappa Unveils Sustainable Packaging For Multipack Beverages

Smurfit Kappa has introduced a range of sustainable packaging alternatives to replace single-use plastics in bundling beverage cans and bottles.

The new corrugated packaging options offered by the company are 100% recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable.

The range comprises three products - GreenClip, TopClip, and Nor-Grip.

The company showcased all three products at its first-ever Better Planet Packaging Day, across its global network of Experience Centres on 21 November.

Arco Berkenbosch, vice-president of innovation and development at Smurfit Kappa, said, "Single-use plastics can have a devastating impact on the environment and designing even more sustainable packaging alternatives is a cornerstone of our Better Planet Packaging initiative.

"We know from our research that 75% of consumers have a preference for sustainable packaging."

Sustainable Alternatives

GreenClip offers an alternative for plastic rings used to group six cans.

Drinks companies are keen to switch to an eco-friendly alternative to plastic rings as it has a damaging effect on marine life, the company said.

The second product, TopClip, aims to replace stretch film used in bundling cans in one pack.

It covers the top of the cans, protecting them from contamination and providing excellent branding opportunities.

The solution cuts carbon footprint by 30% compared to its plastic alternative, the packaging giant added.

Elsewhere, Nor-Grip, launched earlier this year, is a corrugated solution that bundles bottles together into consumer units, eliminating the need for shrink film.
