Rewe, Penny Pledge Support To Tafel Event

German retailer Rewe and its discount offshoot Penny have pledged their support for the Tafel food distribution charity in Cologne, by donating 23 tonnes of shelf-stable food to the organisation in order to mark its 23rd birthday.

Moreover, the Rewe Group donated €10,000 to the winners of the Tafel volunteer competition, and provided food and drinks for an evening event which welcomed approximately 700 volunteers.

Successful Cooperation

"We have been working closely with the local Tafel for more than 20 years in a spirit of trust,” commented Daniela Büchel, divisional director of the Rewe Group. “We are united by the need to help people who need our support. […] Rewe and Penny sell about 99% of their food and the majority of the remaining percent is donated to Tafel.”

On June 8, the traditional 'Lange Tafel' event took place in Cologne, to showcase the work of the charities. In addition to the Cologne arm, there are 940 more of the charity’s divisions throughout Germany.

“Following the 'Lange Tafel' event in Cologne, we are calling on politicians to no longer allow people in our rich country to be marginalised because of poverty and lack of perspective in their lives", explained Jochen Brühl, the chairman of 'Tafel Deutschland e.V.'
