Pernod Ricard To Launch App That Calculates Alcohol Units

Pernod Ricard are to launch a UK version of the innovative Jacob's Creek app which was launched in Australia earlier this year and lets you calculate how many standard drinks you've consumed by simply pointing your smartphone at your wine glass. At the moment there is no fixed date for the release as there are a number of stakeholders involved.

The Wine Line app can calculate how many units of alcohol are in a glass of wine, no matter the shape and size of the glass. The app is ideal for wine drinkers as glass sizes often vary between bars and restaurants meaning people can lose track of their drink consumption.

Whilst carrying out research, Jacob's Creek found that only 86% of Australians were aware of what constituted a 'standard drink'. Research showed that with different sizes of glasses available in restaurants and bars, plus inconsistent pouring made it very challenging for consumers to actively monitor their consumption.

The Wine Line mobile App, in a world first, combined touch-based volume measurement with alcohol percentage data to calculate the user's standard drinks over time.

The app featured an innovative way of estimating how much alcohol consumers were drinking. By using the smartphone camera to take a snapshot of the glass, then getting them to simply trace the shape of the wine in the glass, the app calculated the volume
