Irish Government Braces For Plain-Packaging Legal Challenge

The Irish courts system will next week hear the first case taken by a tobacco firm against the government, over plain-packaging legislation.

According to the Irish Independent newspaper, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) is set to commence its legal action against the government in the Commercial Court next Monday.

On Monday, details of the arguments put forward by the government and JTI will be presented, ahead of what could be a lengthy court case.

In March, Ireland's government formally enacted legislation enforcing plain packaging, the first country in the European Union to do so.
