Spar Hungary Revamps Meat Processing Plant

Spar Hungary has revamped its meat processing plant in Bicske, investing HUF 1.7 billion (around €5.3 million) into the new facility.

The Regnum plant has grown from 7,500 to 10,900m2 after the redevelopment. Spar is the only retail company in Hungary with its own processing plant.

Spar Hungary produces more than 30 million kilograms of pork meat each year and was the first retail chain to be licensed to use the Excellent Quality Pork trademark with its Regnum meat tray products.

As well as the extra capacity to produce meats, a training facility will also be added. “A key principle of ours is to provide training for our colleagues,” said Ferenc Horváth, Director of the Regnum Training Centre and Meat Processing Plant. “As such, in addition to the extended capacity, the meat processing plant will now also function as a professional training centre.”

Hungary significantly reduced its VAT rate on pork from 27 per cent to 5 per cent at the beginning of the year, creating a higher demand for pork products.
